Garlic and Chilli BBQ Prawns with Green Peppers

I love the colours of this simple BBQ dish.

Big juicy prawns on the BBQ are quite often considered to be a traditional dish for Australia. I am lazy though and always buy prawns that have already been peeled. Just the tails remain as a useful handle – don’t eat them 🙂

Teaming the prawns with lots of garlic and chilli gives them great flavour whilst they are cooking. Usually garlic prawns are cooked in a heap of butter, but cooking them in olive oil on the BBQ is a much healthier option. The other great thing about this dish is that it takes only minutes to prepare and cook.

I served this salad-style because I think it looks quite pretty piled up on a plate, but you could also thread onto skewers if you prefer. My Lime Chilli Mayo is a great dip to accompany these.

Ingredients – serves 4:

  • approx 600g/21 oz raw prawns, peeled but with tails remaining
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 3 long red chillis, de-seeded and finely chopped
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large green capsicum (bell pepper), chopped into square pieces

Method:

  • Put the prawns, garlic, chilli and olive oil in a medium bowl and stir to combine. Cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour to let the flavours infuse into the oil.
  • Just before cooking, stir the chopped capsicum (bell pepper) through the mixture.
  • Heat your BBQ grill (preferably the flat plate) to medium high, then tip the mixture onto the grill. Use tongs to spread the prawns out into a single layer (for quicker cooking).
  • Once the prawns start to change colour (i.e. go from grey to pink) – it doesn’t take very long – use the tongs to turn them all over. They are cooked when they have completely changed colour to pink. I also like to get a little bit of a golden tinge to them to show they have been cooked on the BBQ.
  • Remove from the BBQ and pile onto a serving plate.
  • Serve and enjoy!

  1. Oh yummy! The dip must work so well with this too… its flavours would work perfectly. It;s a shame that my blog can’t really feature prawns since they’re relatively expensive 😦
