Seriously Tasty Sausage Rolls

Sausage rolls are a classic party nibble but these have a kick to them.

Every year I make sausage rolls of some description but I usually don’t move too far from the norm. This year I decided to spice things up a bit so I added jalapenos and also some Jack Daniel’s BBQ sauce.

The great thing about these is that they are adaptable to your own tastes. Don’t like jalapenos? Leave them out or swap them for a chilli with less heat. Can’t get JD BBQ sauce? Then use any brand that you do have. The version of the JD sauce that I have is called ‘Rich Honey’ so it is relatively sweet – you might know of something similar.

These are very quick to make and they get eaten speedily too.

Ingredients – makes about 36:

  • 500g/1 lb sausage meat (I use beef as it is what they sell in the supermarket here)
  • 1/2 onion, finely diced
  • 8-10 jalapeno slices from a jar (I used Old El Paso), finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Jack Daniel’s BBQ sauce (I used the Rich Honey version)
  • 3 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed (my sheets are 25cm/10 inches square)
  • a little milk, to glaze
  • poppy seeds, optional, to sprinkle

Method:

  • Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan forced/390F.
  • Put the sausage meat, onion, chopped jalapeno, and BBQ sauce in a large bowl and use your clean hands to mix. It may get a little messy 🙂
  • Lay the pastry sheets out next to each other in a row, overlapping slightly. Press the overlapping edges to join the 3 sheets into one long sheet.
  • Roll half the meat mix into a long sausage shape that stretches the length of the pastry sheet and place this sausage about an inch from the top edge of the pastry.
  • Roll the other half of the meat mix into another long sausage and place this about an inch from the bottom edge of the pastry.
  • Use a little milk to glaze the pastry between the two sausages – this will help the pastry to stick when you roll it.
  • Cut the pastry in half lengthways in between the 2 sausages, so you end up with each sausage on its own piece of pastry.
  • Starting at one of the long edges, slowly roll up the pastry to enclose each sausage.
  • Once both are rolled, glaze the tops with a little milk.
  • Cut each sausage up into 2.5cm/1 inch pieces. You should get about 18 from each sausage.
  • Sprinkle over the poppy seeds, if using.
  • Divide the sausage rolls between 2 baking sheets that you have sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Cook for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Enjoy hot or cold!
